Fans of Shrek should celebrate because, after 16 years, the adored green monster is finally making his long-awaited comeback to the big screen. The casts of the next film, "Shrek 5," have announced that Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Mike Myers will be returning. Myers will return to the title role of Shrek, Diaz will voice Shrek's wife Princess Fiona, and Murphy will bring back his hilarious sidekick Donkey.
DreamWorks Animation teased fans with a July 1, 2026 release date when they formally revealed the big news. "Not too Far, Far Away... Shrek 5 is coming to theaters," the studio said. The first new adventure in the Shrek universe since "Shrek Forever After" in 2010 will take place in this next movie.
The franchise has a reputation of captivating audiences worldwide, so excitement is strong even if plot details are still being kept under wraps. The first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was won by the 2001 release of "Shrek," which also became a global sensation.
