Set to Return for First Shrek Film in 16 Years in 2026

Fans of Shrek should celebrate because, after 16 years, the adored green monster is finally making his long-awaited comeback to the big screen. The casts of the next film, "Shrek 5," have announced that Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Mike Myers will be returning. Myers will return to the title role of Shrek, Diaz will voice Shrek's wife Princess Fiona, and Murphy will bring back his hilarious sidekick Donkey.

DreamWorks Animation teased fans with a July 1, 2026 release date when they formally revealed the big news. "Not too Far, Far Away... Shrek 5 is coming to theaters," the studio said. The first new adventure in the Shrek universe since "Shrek Forever After" in 2010 will take place in this next movie.

The franchise has a reputation of captivating audiences worldwide, so excitement is strong even if plot details are still being kept under wraps. The first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was won by the 2001 release of "Shrek," which also became a global sensation. Along with "Shrek Forever After," its sequels "Shrek 2" (2004) and "Shrek The Third" (2007) kept fans enthralled and cemented the series' dominance at the box office.

It's interesting to note that "Shrek 5" will mark the sixth movie in the larger Shrek series, which also includes spin-offs starring the daring Puss in Boots character played by Antonio Banderas. The popularity of various spin-offs, such as "Puss in Boots" and "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," is another proof of the Shrek universe's ongoing appeal.

Even though it's still unclear if Antonio Banderas will make a cameo in "Shrek 5," Eddie Murphy teased even more fan frenzy. In a recent interview, Murphy hinted that in addition to making a comeback in "Shrek 5," Donkey would possibly feature in his own spin-off movie. With great enthusiasm, he disclosed that recording for his role had already started for the fifth installment, which had started months ago.

"Shrek 5" aims to amaze viewers once more with its iconic characters and distinctive combination of heart and comedy, carrying on the heritage of one of the most popular animation brands. As the release date draws near, fans can't wait to dive more into the magical and fantastical world of Shrek.
